Atelier Kohta : Atas Plated Desserts at Kagurazaka

Tasty desserts but I'm not convinced or crazily impressed.

It was more like a dessert showmanship at L'atelie Kohta, a dessert cum patisserie in Kagurazaka which have had positive reviews on tabelog. It's one of the places on my list but not of any high priority because I actually left empty handed after visiting the shop once after realizing that none of the cakes attracted me. I know it's not very accurate to judge by looks but I guess it was that sixth sense that prompted me to stay away from them. Maybe I should give the counter desserts a chance. After all, this place is more popular for the counter desserts with so many pictures of Chef Kohta setting an orange peel on fire for his Crepe Suzette.

And alas I did.

It was a weekday afternoon and the counter tables were seated with ladies. No guys. I was told to wait 30 minutes before I could be seated despite the empty seats. Not a problem as I understood that it might be tough for one chef to handle too many orders at that same time. And hence when I finally got seated, I ordered two desserts; a parfait and a French toast .

The Coffee & Chocolate Parfait (\1300) was a chocolate symphony of coffee granite, dark chocolate mousse, Brandy ice cream, Brandy cream and coffee gelee. Bitter and mature, it tasted more like a coffee jelly dessert and tiramisu combined rather than an opera cake like the Chef had suggested. If that's the case, I think I would rather buy an opera cake. Neither the booze nor the chocolate was strong enough to give a satisfying kick even though the textures were still acceptable.
・ブルーチーズのフレンチトースト
ブルーチーズのソース、蜂蜜、ロゼシャーベット
I prefer the French Toast with Blue Cheese Sauce and Honey (\1300) as the flavors are heady even though it was stinky. Since I've always had a soft spot for cheese and honey, this combination worked for me but I'm not sure if it would suit everyone.

However, the French toasts were too eggy and sturgid. It tasted like those that anyone at home can make. Not that it was extremely bad but I was expecting a lot more since this is almost like a fine-dining dessert place to me. Furthermore, the Rose champagne sorbet was too icy to bring out any taste of the wine and thus seemed rather redundant. Just a simple glass of dessert wine that pair with the strong cheese umami will be good enough.

While there's a real live performance of dessert preparation right in front my eyes, I don't see how it added value to my dessert experience. Overall, I find that the dishes are quite cold, somehow lacking the passion and sincerity of a patissier. If I were to compare this to Toshi Yoroizuka's dessert atelier at Roppongi, this isn't a place I would return again.

A person's experience with food is not just about the food itself, but also the ambience and the form of human interactions that exist in the environment. As Chef Kohta was busy interacting with the other customers, I overheard his conversation which left me rather disappointed. I won't share in detail here.

I thought I saw a chef who is more driven by profit-making than passion.

I left the place disenchanted.

[NEW OPEN] Gelateria TIE-AN @ Shibuya : [新登场] 東京の和风冰淇淋店

Looking for another Japanese gelateria shop after Ouca? Tie-an is the place to go. Located in the basement of Shibuya Hikarie, Tie-an is gelataria selling ice cream flavors that are inspired by Japanese ingredients and traditional Japanese desserts. Think strawberry Daifuku, Mitarashi dango, condensed milk Ichigo, Edamame Raspberry White Chocolate served in a cup with a rice cracker biscuit from SENBEI BROTHERS.

Opened just recently in September 2016, this place also serves soups as well as savoury and sweet crepes. The ice cream is served in a cup and sold at a minimum of 2 flavors (441 yen) I decided to go with 3 flavors (540 yen) since there's too many delicious flavors that I
want after a few samplings.

The five-grain chocolate was smooth and bitter with a toasty aroma from the grains. The other two were Matcha Biscotti and Strawberry Condensed Milk, which were not too bad but I still prefer the gelatos from Far East Bazaar.

The use of healthier ingredients like soy milk and cane sugar might explain why it melts faster than average. It wasn't too sweet but I wished the scoops were as big as those shown on their official website.

Kajitsuen 果実園 Fruit Cafe in Tokyo : Popular but Mediocre

Kajitsuen has had a long presence at Tokyo station selling fruit parfaits, fruit pancakes and fruit cakes. I think fruit desserts make a good business because people generally won't hate fruits and they can be charged at a high price. I finally got a chance to check out its opened a new outlet near Shinjuku station since the location is more convenient and opens till late.

As attractive as the tall fruit cream cakes may seem, they were utterly disappointing and fared even poorer than food from those franchise cafes. The sponge of the Pistachio Strawberry cake was dry and the pistachio taste wasn't as strong as it looked. I won't be surprise if artificial coloring has been added.

Of course the freshness of the seasonal strawberries can't be argued but I won't pay more than 1000 yen for a cake of such substandard quality ever again. Better head to Takano Parlour.

The Strawberry Parfait (1300 yen) was more value-for-money than the cake because there was an seemingly endless supply of strawberries. However beyond that, it was just a tower of artificial-tasting whipped cream (like those squirted from metal canisters), vanilla and strawberry ice cream. It's probably the worse ice cream I've ever had in Japan because I've yet to encounter anything as bad as this.

I try to convince myself that I'm paying for the quality fruits. But in that case, why don't I just go to the supermarket for the fruits?

This was my first and shall be my last visit

LAITIER レティエ : Probably the Best Soft Serve in Tokyo

"To produce the best soft serve in Tokyo" That's the motto of Aoki san, the owner behind Laitier, a cute blue soft serve shop near Kitasando.

Although I haven't tried (will never be able to try) all the soft serves in Tokyo, I must say that this is one of the better soft serves in town. Meaning milk house in French, Laitier offers soft serve made with premium milk directly delivered from Shizuoka Izu Farm which has won the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) gold award for 19th times.

The cream has only a dairy fat content of 4.5%, which is 8-12% of average soft serve and the sugar is reduced by 75%! Not sure if it's truly low in calories but hey, at least it did make us feel less guilty indulging in the huge serving of soft serve.

Yes, even though the price is not cheap, I must say the portions here are so generous--the cone felt very heavy but the soft serve was smooth, dense and not too sweet. Inspired by the French dessert Nougat Glacee, the Hachimitsu and three nuts soft serve (780 yen) was truly a nutty delight laced with lavender honey and the orange peel. The caramelized shards of almonds Pistachio and pecan nuts complemented the soft serve so well that I wished they could sell them in a separate bag so I can nibble at home.

The Otoko Brandy Chocolat Soft Serve (780 yen) was obviously targeted at Otoko aka guys but I think this would appeal to any gender especially those who love alcohol because there's Hennesy in the spuit and Nama dark chocolates. The original milk-based soft serve can be upgraded to mascarpone-based for just 50 yen which we did for this Otoko Brandy flavor. It was wonderfully lush in texture with mild Savoury notes not found in the original flavor.

Best if you can try both types of soft serve base (the original vs. the mascarpone) to do a taste test for yourself. My vote goes to mascarpone.

Salon Bake & Tea @ Shinjuku NEWoman : 30-cm jumbo parfait and other quality French desserts

I am usually very skeptical about desserts from cafe restaurants in commercial shopping complexes because they tend to be of very mediocre quality. However, I was totally proved wrong at Salon Bake & Tea, a restaurant that serves all-day French food and desserts in the newly opened NEWoMAN mall.

This is part of the Salon adam et Rope group whose main business line is fashion. I couldn't think of another better place than Salon Bake & Tea for late night desserts in Shinjuku because other options are franchised cafes in department store or fruit tart cafes. Not anything attractive to me to be honest.
 Tartelette Au Poitron タルト・ポティロン
One can order the specialty plated desserts or pick and choose any petit entremets showcased on stylish plates at a corner of the restaurant. I was shocked to learn that each petit entremet cost a hefty \400 but the quality was worth the splurge.

cassolette カスレッツ
カスタードクリームと柚子ベリーコンフィチュールが入ったシュー生地のお菓子
My favourite was the Cassolette and Tartelette Au Poitron as the sable base is excellently crunchy and buttery. Especially the cassolette whose gold crackly sugary skin shattered into a pool of custard and yuzu berry confiture cusped within the choux pastry.

Saint Honore au Chocolat サントノーレショコラ
If I had known earlier that they've got an Order Buffet promotion from 2500 yen for tea + a buffet of these petit entremets based on order from 11am-4pm, I would have grabbed this chance
The 30-cm tall seasonal Sweet Potato parfait stood out not only in height but flavors. This isn't just the usual whipped cream and cakes stacked over a pile of cornflakes. Right at the base is an ultralight raspberry jelly layered with vanilla custard mousse and fresh cream before being generously buried in homemade cocoa sables and granola.

Above all these decadent goodness is luscious pumpkin cream, raspberry confiture, marron paste and a sweet potato burger choux that's encased with vanilla ice cream suspended at the top.

The composition was flawless and the golden ratio contributed to a perfect harmony of all the characters in this seemingly chaotic work. Truly one of the best parfaits in 2016 besides the Purple Sweet Potato Apple Yoghurt parfait from Kissho Karyo.

Far East Bazaar : Hidden Matcha Arabian Gelato that beats the "World's Best Matcha Ice Cream"

I've been hesitating whether to write this because it is SO GOOD that I wanted to keep this a secret. But I've decided to pen it down as this place exudes such a unique charm not found in other ice cream parlor. In fact, Far East Bazaar didn't start off as a shop that sells gelato. It's a company that focuses on organic dried nuts, fruits, spices, herbs and salt--practically everything that reminds you of a 18th century Middle East trader who sells his goods on the Silk Road

Anyway, what blew me away was the line-up Arabian Gelato that I spotted at its Shibuya Hikarie Outlet. I was expecting it to taste like the sticky, elastic Turkish ice cream but it didn't turn out that way. In fact, the texture Arabian Gelato doesn't differ too much from an average gelato in Tokyo.
Every order of ¥500 comes with 3 choices. I had the signature Hanamitsu (coconut flower honey) which had a really pleasant floral sweetness, Dates as well as Rikyu. The latter is the one that shook my senses with its unapologetic bitterness and took me seconds before I recover to realize that THIS is the one that I've been searching for. THIS has snatched the "the World's Best Matcha Gelato" title, in my opinion, from Suzuki En @ Asakusa  . Never did I expect to find it in a place that sells dry goods, if I were to put it in blunt terms.

The opulence of this gelato is way beyond sheer imagination......but not everyone will enjoy it for sure. So be mentally prepared that this is NOT the cup for you (but YES for me since there were the other two sweet flavors to provide a nice balance) The matcha gelato here could possibly be way beyond human threshold as even the ice cream lady warned me for the intensity before I took it.

I walked out of the shop as the last customer, smiling with a cup of sweet and bitter gelato in victory mood.

Chou d'enfer : Famous Paris Chouquette Shop Opens in Tokyo Shinjuku

Change is accelerating everywhere in Tokyo and one big major change in Shinjuku is the completion of NEWoMAN, a new commercial building that includes several F&B booths, book store, Zakka shop within the extended wing of JR Shinjuku station.

One of the shops that I've been yearning to check out was Chou d' Enfer, a brainchild of Paris top chefs Alan Ducasse and Christopher Michalok which has gained thumbs up from the Paris foodies.

But I was rather disenchanted when I found out that these little punies cost a hefty at a size smaller than my palm. Instead of getting a standard box of 6 different flavor, I opted for SAISON, a bag of 3 flavors that included the seasonal and Japan-only flavor of Fruit Rouges
The pearl-sugar crusted choux tasted so pedestrian that I wondered if it is the media that is playing up the hype. The Custard, which is a benchmark flavor to measure a cream puff, had a stale awry taste that wasn't pleasant at all. It was slightly masked in the Matcha version but the latter did not impress either. Three pops into the mouth and everything were gone .

It is not difficult to replicate this from home kitchens and there are plenty, really PLENTY of other cream puff options that are better and more value for money that this. Even those from convenience stores tastes better.
I was glad that I didn't have to queue like the rest since I happened to walk past in the morning (Yes, believe it or not, there is a queue and apparently all the chouquettes sell out early) And most importantly, I was relief that I had not invested in the box of 6.

Price for 6 - 734 yen
Tradition (3 pcs) - 313 yen
Saison (3 pcs) - 367 yen
