L’ Epicurien レピキュリアン : One of the Oldest Patisserie in Kichijoji

How old is old? 10? 20? 50? Or 100?

Well, this little quaint patisserie is often reported as one of the oldest patisseries in Kichijoji despite being opened only in 1996. 22 years doesn’t seem like a long span for a shop if we compare it to those historical establishments that boast a good hundred years or above.

However, in terms of patisseries, I think it can be considered one of the earliest pioneers as the boom of French pastries only took off from 2000s. If age is not a good sign, the retro interior and the type of pastry selections will tell you all. Unlike most patisseries that offer sophisticated or colorful petit gateaus that will attract your attention, the cakes here are mostly classic and conservative French pastries. Next to the display chiller is an area where all the baked pastries such as apple turnovers, constellation tarts...who still bakes and even sells constellation tarts these days?

To be honest nothing attracted me but we decided to try the signature chibourst tart, wishing that it would change our first impression of this place but it didn’t.  It was as sweet as any other chibourst and did not have any memorable factor. The other coconut mousse cake fade into the background too.

However, the dark knight of the day was the humble apple filo pastry. Crisp, flaky and pleasantly complemented with raisins and custard. Good to know that this is another patisserie where dine-in is available but seats are cramped and the cakes won't probably convince you to come back again.

Kooriya Pissu or Peace 氷屋ぴぃす Kakigori @ Kichijoji

The Kakigori at Peace (pee-su) can really pissed customers. No, I'm serious. Imagine arriving at 12 noon sharp when the shop opens for business, only to realize in horror that there is a written waiting list on which you have to jot your name down at the next available slot which is 6.52pm.

Perhaps that's not a problem for those who live nearby but for most, you either find something to do in between or opt for the takeaway option. So we chose to takeaway which also requires 30min of queuing time.

Takeaway options are limited and not as fanciful as eat-in flavors. But they are slightly cheaper. I'm glad we didn't wait till 6.52pm because the Kakigori were extremely normal.  And there is no other components within the ice.

There could be only 2 customers seated in the 8-seat eatery but they will not allow anyone to enter earlier. Can't understand how the business here works? Me neither.

Hattifnatt Cafe @ Kichijoji : Not your typical Kawaii Cafe

There are many kawaii cafes around in Japan but the kind of kawaii at Hattifnatt is rather different. It's a kind of kawaii that draws from childhood storybooks and probably makes your hair stand less than the other. It feels like a form of Zakka-graffiti fusion art to me and one can expect this place to be popular among teenage girls here.

The food plays along the same line but thankfully they taste good. I'm surprised by the quality of the desserts as kawaii food usually taste worse or like sh*t. The caramel sauce of the banana chiffon was intensely bitter and the cake wasn't too dry. As for he Pumpkin Mont Blanc, the base was constructed of puff pastry--a welcome change from the usual tart base. It gave a flaky savoury touch to the sweet pumpkin cream that was strangely filled with frozen apple cubes. The drinks are too sweet but I guessed it's hard to resist ordering them since they are probably the "cutest" food on the menu.

For more handmade Zakka items, hop over to its sister retail shop just next door.
